INTRODUCTION
Derla is the head of the Parliament of Wizards and the actual ruler of Tanzenier Kingdom. She is a lich and a master of malevolent and powerful spells. Her origins are unknown to the common folk.
APPEARANCE AND CHARACTER
Like all other liches, Derla is only a skeleton. She is lavished in gold jewelry, all of which glows red as it increases in age. The jewelry frames Derla as a noble and is decorated across her robe, one which has weathered so badly over the years that its original color is no longer identifiable.
Derla speaks to others gently, with courtesy, and with respect. Her actions towards them, however, are cruel and brutal. She was said to be an oppressive ruler. She takes lives without blinking an eye. She craves power and money, and she relentlessly pursues supreme magic. She doesn’t harbor normal human emotions, ones like love, hate, gratitude, or sadness. She wastes no energy on things she deems valueless. Derla bases all her choices on how much the outcome will benefit her, and her chance to defeat the adversary in the end.
Derla has a high talent for magic and no one can retain knowledge better than her.
HISTORY
When Derla first came to Tanzenier Kingdom, the kingdom already had a long history. She never told anyone where she came from, or why she chose to settle here. However, liches have an endless longing for powerful magic. It was obvious that Derla saw Tanzenier as the only place that could truly meet her wishes.
Because of Derla’s extreme talent, people privately joked that the magic written in their ancient textbooks was actually written by her, before her initial death. As Derla’s power and influence grew, she quickly joined the Parliament and became one of Tanzenier’s rulers. After the unexpected death of the Parliament’s former head, Derla took his place. It was widely rumored that his death was not an accident.
A banquet was held to honor Derla’s ascendance as head of the Parliament. Most of the attendees put on fake smiles and congratulated her, even if they didn’t mean it. Only one chief wizard actively showed disrespect to Derla. Others told him to hold his tongue, but Derla was willing to hear him out. The wizard questioned her unknown past and openly accused her of scheming the murder of the former head of the Parliament. Just as he was ranting about his suspicions, she vanished into the air and teleported beside him. All in the matter of an instant, the wizard was beheaded. Ever since the day of that bloody banquet, no one has dared to object to Derla publicly or privately.
Despite continued infighting within the Parliament, the country became very prosperous under Derla’s rule, thanks to the extensive use of magics in all walks of life.
Civilians never had to worry about their day-to-day lives. She governed the kingdom in a fair and orderly manner. However, behind the scenes, she continued to erode the power of the other Parliament members, expanding her control over Tanzenier.
Members of the Parliament tried to secretly investigate Derla’s origins, but they supposedly found nothing. In the 20th year of Derla’s reign over the kingdom, an envoy presented a portrait of a peerless beauty to her. She glanced at it and gave the envoy a large sum of gold as a reward. After the envoy left, she lit fire to the portrait and reduced it to ash. Rumor has it that the woman in the portrait was Derla before she died and became a lich.
It was actually Lofus, one of the Parliament members, who discovered the artwork. He hired someone to present it to Derla as a way to challenge her. Derla didn’t even turn a hair when she saw the portrait. Later on, she used his infatuation for the elf, Aeluin, against him and eventually removed him from power. His identity as a member of the Parliament was stripped away from him, and his punishment was execution by fire. Derla used this incident as a warning to anyone trying to seek out her past. The incident also indirectly verified the elves’ prophecies, something that came to light later and involved the elf Aeluin.
As dark forces raged across Armuda, the Continent gradually became more turbulent. Derla was one of the first to realize this. At the Parliament meeting, she suggested Tanzenier should choose a side instead offighting alone. She seemed to be inclined to join the dark forces but her proposal was rejected by an overwhelming majority of wizards.
It is said that when Aeluin returned to Tanzenier Kingdom, Derla met with her in private. No one knows what they spoke of and what this cunning lich is scheming.
