Veara

Along, long time ago, the elf race was divided into two clans-one more benevolent and accepting, and the other self-centered and evil. These two groups were constantly engaged in a violent war. To end the bloodshed, the benevolent elves forced their dark brethren underground. As the dark elves readjusted to their underground life, they grew to hate the races on the surface more and more.

Veara, however, was an exception among her clan. Despite being born and raised among the dark elves, she maintained a kind heart. When she got older, she decided that her life needed to be lived on the surface. Veara left the dark elves and traveled to the one kingdom she believed could give her a new life: Sacengate.

Veara arrived at a critical time in Sacengate’s history: The old king had just passed away, and those around the throne were eager to seize power. As tensions brewed, the dark forces arrived to provoke violence-soon the kingdom had collapsed into war. Veara knew the fate of Sacengate was in jeopardy. She helped the kingdom win against the dark forces, ensuring peace and prosperity for the new king. To show his gratefulness, the new king bestowed Veara with the Medal of Honor-an accolade only knights received. In her new home, Veara was known as the Savior.

But such honor did not bring Veara contentment. She knew that in helping the humans she had betrayed her bloodline. At the same time, an evil elf that helped humans would only be seen as an outsider to all other creatures and races. Suddenly, a demon materialized in front of her. He had heard her insecurities and tried to seduce her with promises of power and acceptance. “If you join the dark forces, ” he told her, “you’ll be stronger and more powerful than ever before. ” Veara rejected the demon’s offer. Her morals were too valuable to her to betray.

Soon after, a terrible disease began to spread rapidly throughout Sacengate. Many people perished in the plague. The demon, disguised in different faces, whispered to the dying humans:
“Veara is to blame. Veara brings the curse from the dark elves. Burn her, and your health will return. ” The threat of death drove the humans crazy. In their frenzy, they kidnapped Veara and prepared to burn her alive. Yet Veara refused to fight back, not wanting to hurt the unarmed civilians.

Flames rose into the sky, and as Veara burned the sick turned healthy again. People rejoiced exuberantly, and no one cared about the dying elf. As the smoke thickened, Veara heard the demon’s voice once again: “These people you so stupidly love are not worthy of you. Join the dark forces, and you will be saved. ” Again, Veara could not be persuaded. She knew that it was the dark forces who caused the plague-she couldn’t blame the humans for being afraid and desperate. Veara told the demon she would rather die than become a monster like him.

Just when she thought the fire would end her life, it was extinguished. Remarkably, Veara walked out of the ashes alive and physically unharmed besides a blessed mark on her forehead. The humans around her froze in shock. Veara, weak from the mental torture, collapsed. Fearing that the plague would start again, no one dared to approach her. Finally, an old man – who had nearly died himself from the disease – came out of the crowd and gave Veara a drink of water.

The kindness of the old man rippled throughout the crowd. Almost simultaneously, the humans realized that Veara was not to blame for the disease. They rushed to her aide. They spread the news of her survival throughout Sacengate, telling those that feared the plague that Veara was innocent. When Veara opened her eyes, she was surrounded by the people she once saved, looking down at her with their eyes full of concern. She knew that she had made the right choice – the world is always worth fighting for.
