Carlotta is the deadliest member of the Assassins Guild. At least she was, until fate drove her to madness. Her face was branded with a mocking clown mask, one that slowly pushed her sanity over the edge as it maintained a magic influence on her. Carlotta became so twistedly fixated with revenge that not even death could free her of her obsession. Crazy and undead, she drove her blade through the hearts of every member of the Assassins Guild. With nothing left to tie down her duties, she clings to the memories of a younger sister lost many years ago.
APPEARANCE AND CHARACTER
No one who’s seen Carlotta’s appearance has lived to describe it. She was taken away by the Assassins Guild at a young age. Growing up, she moved through the shadows. Not even her contracts saw her until it was too late. The visual people have of her is her exaggerated and frightening clown mask, one whose image has passed on through the streets by the rumors of the wind. Carlotta was insane, and her wild laugh let her contracts know she was coming. If that wasn’t sinister enough, she would hum a particular song as she cut their strings of life as easily as swatting a fly on the wall.
Carlotta was born in the slums of Trassvertian along with her younger sister, Sorsha. Her parents struggled so harshly to make a living that they never had time to look after their two daughters. Because of this, Carlotta took up the responsibility of looking after her younger sister. She learned to cook and care for her. She even learned a nursery rhyme to put Sorsha to bed. The two spent every minute together. They were inseparale.
Unfortunately, Carlotta and Sorsha’s parents were too poor to support both of them. They sold Sorsha to a human trader, filling Carlotta with heavy sorrow. After much grief, Carlotta vowed to someday reunite with the sister she had lost.
Soon after, the Assassins Guild caught wind of Carlotta. They saw her grief as a weapon they could manipulate. They recruited her and made her say goodbye to her parents, something Carlotta expressed no regret doing. Carlotta underwent hellish training and grew to be extremely talented. By the time she was old enough to be officially recognized as an assassin, she was already the most feared member of the guild. As such, the organization made Carlotta’s image their official calling card.
As Carlotta’s fame grew, the Assassins Guild began to worry. They had sharpened their weapon too finely. They were afraid of her tremendous skill and insatiable bloodthirst. The other assassins feared one day she would lose control and betray them. Because of this, they decided to investigate Carlotta’s past. What they found led them to a startling decision.
It was a rainy night. The Assassins Guild informed Carlotta that they had found her younger sister, Sorsha. They told Carlotta she could meet Sorsha, but only if Carlotta agreed to wear a magical clown mask that would force her to obey all of the Assassins Guild’s orders. Even in Carlotta’s older age, she was still driven by the overwhelming loss of her sister. After seeing proof that the guild had found Sorsha, a trinket Sorsha used to wear, Carlotta put on the mask without protest.
Never had Carlotta imagined it would all be a trick. The Assassins Guild received the trinket from Carlotta’s parents, not from Sorsha. The guild had betrayed Carlotta, but the mask still bound her to her oath. As she continued to wear it, her behavior grew beyond her control. It was manipulating her every action. The more she struggled to resist, the more mental stress the mask pressed upon her.
Carlotta swore she would no longer do the guild’s bidding. She realized the only moments she had control over herself were the brieffew seconds that followed completing a task for the guild. As such, she found only one way to permanently free herselffrom the mental binds of the mask. The next time she completed an ordered contract… Carlotta took a knife to her own throat.
Carlotta’s hatred for the Assassins Guild couldn’t be described in words. They had betrayed her, and she could not let go of her sorrow for her lost sister. Perhaps it was the effect of the mask or possibly even Carlotta’s own bloodthirst for revenge, but Carlotta found herself reborn as undead after death. Freed of all manipulation, she slid through the streets with a dagger in her hand. She went to the Assassins Guild. One by one, all members of the guild were slaughtered overnight. Blood splattered across the walls as Carlotta hummed the nursery song she used to sing to Sorsha to coax her to sleep. However, this time it was the guild’s turn to rest… forever.
Carlotta hasn’t appeared in ages since she destroyed the Assassins Guild. Some say she’s still longing for her sister. Others say she still stalks the night. But the one question on everyone’s mind is… who will die the next time Carlotta hums that song?
